Anointing of the sick

The Anointing of the Sick “is not a sacrament reserved only for those who are at the point of death. Therefore, it is fitting to receive it when the faithful begin to be in danger of death from illness or old age” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1514).

”With the Anointing of the Sick and the prayer of the presbyters, the whole Church commends the sick to the suffering and glorified Lord, that He may relieve and save them. This sacrament is especially intended to strengthen those who are afflicted by illness” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1499–1532).

“The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has as its effect:

  • The union of the sick person more closely with the Passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church.
  • Gives comfort, peace, and encouragement, and strengthens him to overcome the difficulties associated with the state of illness or the frailty of old age
  • Brings the forgiveness of sins if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of Penance.
  • Sometimes, if it is conducive to the salvation of the soul, this grace also includes the restoration of bodily health
  • Finally, this grace prepares for the passage to eternal life.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1532)
